This Month in U.S. Navy History
----------------------------------------------

Our Naval History gives us a firm foundation and a source of great pride. Chief Petty Officers play a significant role in keeping alive the stories from our past as they lead our Navy into the future.

February is a month with many significant events for the Navy. Here are just a few:

1779:
John Paul Jones takes command of Bonhomme Richard

1800:
USS Essex becomes the first U.S. Navy vessel to cross the Equator

1846:
General order on Port and Starboard - "It having been represented to the Department, that confusion arises from the use of the words 'Larboard' and 'Starboard,' in consequence of the similiarity of sound, the word 'Port' is hereafter to be substituted for 'Larboard.'

1854:
The first chapel to be built on Navy property was dedicated at Annapolis, MD

1898:
U.S. battleship Maine explodes in Havana Harbor

1933:
The first "true" aircraft carrier, USS Ranger, is commissioned

1942:
USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown make the first WW II air strike at Japanese Marshall Islands

1945:
Marines and a Navy corpsman raise the flag at Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima

1959:
