Captain John Paul Jones of Ranger led a landing
party raid on Whitehaven, England

1798:
Congress establishes Department of the Navy

1862:
Battle of New Orleans. Union Navy commanded by
David Farragut runs past forts into the
Mississippi River

April 1, Navy General Order 409 of 25 February
1893 established the rate of Chief Petty Officer

1900:
Navy accepted its first submarine, USS Holland

1906:
Navy assists with relief operations following the San Francisco earthquake and fire

1909:
Commander Robert E. Peary reports reaching
the North Pole

1911:
LT Theodore Ellyson qualifies as first naval aviator

1942:
USS Hornet launches Army bombers for first attack on Japan. The famous Doolittle Raid

1945:
Over 1200 Navy ships and Army troops begin invasion at Okinawa

1945:
Carrier aircraft defeat last Japanese Navy sorties at the Battle of East China Sea. Yamato, world's largest battleship, and five other ships sunk

1951:
First Navy use of jet aircraft as a bomber, launched from carrier USS Princeton

1966:
The Command, US Naval Forces Vietnam established

1968:
USS New Jersey recommissioned for shore bombardment duty in Vietnam

1979:
Launching of first Trident submarine, USS Ohio (SSBN-726)

1988:
USS Samuel B. Roberts struck Iranian mine off Qatar

1991:
U.N. ceasefire ends Persian Gulf War

1992:
First five coed recruit companies graduate from NTC Orlando, FL

1993:
SECDEF memo ordered Armed Forces to train and assign women on combat aircraft and most combat ships.
