This Month in U.S. Navy History
----------------------------------------------

Here are some March events from the proud past of The World's Most Powerful Navy:

1862:
First battle between ironclads, USS Monitor and CSS Virginia.

1867:
Civil Engineering Corps created.

1871:
Navy Medical Corps established.

1911:
Hulk of USS Maine sunk at sea in deep water with full military honors.

1915:
Congress created the Federal Naval Reserve, leading to the Naval Reserve Force.

*1917:
Loretta Walsh becomes the first woman Chief Petty Officer when sworn in as a Chief Yeoman.

1922:
USS Jupiter was recommissioned as Langley, the Navy's first aircraft carrier.

1925:
Congress authorized restoration of USS Constitution

1942:
VP-82 is the first to sink a German submarine, U-656, during World War II.

"Seabees" name and insignia officially authorized

1943:
Numbered fleet system established

1958:
Battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) decommissioned. This is the first time since 1895 that the Navy was without an active battleship.

1992:
USS Missouri (BB-63), the last active American battleship, was decommissioned.

1994:
First orders issued for women assigned aboard a combat ship, USS Eisenhower.
