On 1 April 2003, the CPO community celebrates the 110th anniversary of the rate of Chief Petty Officer. Navy General order 409 of 25 February 1893 established the rate, effective 1 April that year.

Hulk of USS Maine sunk at sea in deep water with full military honors
1915
Congress created the Federal Naval Reserve, the predecessor of today's modern Naval Reserve Force

Loretta Walsh becomes the first woman Navy CPO when sworn in as a Chief Yeoman

USS Jupiter was recommissioned as Langley, the Navy's first aircraft carrier

Congress authorized restoration of USS Constitution
